Mandolin Lessons?

I don’t know if it’s me, if it’s my love for Grateful Dawg, or just the sweet twang of a David Grisman’s Mandolin but from time to time I can’t help but think I should be strumming the mandolin.

I was just reading a hyperlocal blog that had nothing to do with mandolins, it dealt with a grass fire just a mile or so away.  But the author included the video below.

The fire was on Willow Pass Rd. which happens to also run right outside my office window.  That’s why I read the post in the first place.

To him the video was relevant as the fire was on the same road as the song.

To me the video and the mandolin sparked (pun intended) a connection.  I really like the sound of the mandolin.

Now I’m wondering, since I like the mandolin that perhaps the blog author likes the same.  If he likes Mandolins, maybe I might like him too.  If he sold gizmo’s and I was in the market for a gizmo - I might just have to look him up.  I can see the headline now.

“Gizmo Salesman nets HUGE contract - cites mandolin video”

Maybe I should send him one of my favorite songs, Jerry and David Performing Ripple

This is a classic example of The Long Tail

Moral of the Story:  If your throwing out a fishin’ net - cast it long and wide!

Cast in a major motion picture!

No, not me.  But that’s what I’m thinking “The Red Max” is trying to do.

I happened to be watching one of my favorites, which listed someone else interesting, which listed someone else interesting, which listed Max.  The dark looking beer in his last shot caught my attention.

One of my favorite found mugshotter's

Creative people have creative friends.  I also liked what amariliojr is working on, when he get’s to 88 he’ll be pretty dizzy.

TheDailyMugShot is pure fun. That’s all.  It’ll take less than a minute of your time and it is guaranteed to make you smile.  Nothing wrong with that, eh?

One Way Blogging

Why do you blog?  Think about that for a second.  What about the blogs you read?  Why are they blogging?

I blog so that I can get information out to “my people”.  I blog so that I can get higher rankings in search engines, and I blog so that I can increase my business traffic.  As a side benefit I also get to connect with smart people like you!

The point is that I know exactly why I blog.  How about you?

I found a blog yesterday that had no idea why it was blogging.  Not a clue.  It wasn’t really blogging, it was more like plagiarizing.  Surprisingly, it wasn’t a splog either.   Not a hint of advertising.  I honestly think they have no clue.

I found them because they popped up on one of my Google Alerts.  I recognized the article from a story I had been quoted in that appeared in BankRate.  I clicked on the link and started reading the blog.

No, they didn’t quote the article or the author - it was just straight cut and paste.  But what also surprised me was the fact that nowhere on this blog was any way to contact the “authors”.  There was no links back to their main site.  No forms to fill out. Not even an “Apply Now”.

Nothing.

 no contact blogging?

So why blog?

  • You can’t increase biz if they don’t know how or cannot get a hold of you.
  • You aren’t selling ad words or banners.
  • There isn’t even a link back to your main site anywhere.

Contact information is always JOB #1.

You need to make it easy for the reader to contact you and even easier for them to find that way of contacting you.  This blog has links right below the “Welcome Video”.  Mike’s Minute has 3 ways right at the top of every post, and 4 ways at the bottom.  (This blog has even more!)

Take a look at your own blog.

Writing great content is key.  But if I come to read what you’ve written and want to contact you, how fast can I find that info? Anything greater than a couple of seconds or a couple of clicks and I’m gone!

So, why do you blog?
